New Age Guru Turns to Jesus

Doreen Virtue

Western graduate Doreen Virtue is on mission to help others leave the movement she once embraced

Until five years ago, Doreen Virtue wasa top-selling New Age author, speakingat seminars around the world andappearing on shows like Oprah andThe View. She had her own brand of“angel cards” and published books aboutNew Age practices like card reading, energy healing, hypnosis, and chakras.Virtue’s life took a dramatic turn in 2017,when she decided to read through theentire Bible for the first time. She readDeuteronomy 18:10-12 and was stunnedby God’s warning to the Israelites notto follow the occult practices of thesurrounding nations.

“I remember reading throughthe list of the things that theCanaanites did and realizing it wasthe same things that I was doing,”she recalls. “Then I got to the partwhere it says, ‘Anyone who doesthese things is detestable to theLord.’”

Virtue was shocked. For most ofher life she had believed she wasa Christian. Her mother was aChristian Scientist and raised heras an “open-minded” Christian. Infact, she was somewhat uniqueamong New Age teachers forthe way she blended Christianvocabulary with New Agephilosophy.

“New age seemed like it was theanswer. I heard the gospel all thetime, but I had a heartof stone.”

For much of her life, she believed shewas following the “real Jesus”, focusingon the “loving parts” that appealed to herin the gospels. But like other New Agers, she also believed that all paths led to Godand that concepts like sin and the devilwere made up to control people.

Reading God’s Word opened her eyesto see that her New Age beliefs andpractices were in fact a deception.

“The veil was lifted by the Holy Spirit andI finally understood that I was a sinner,”she recalls.

At 59 years of age, the NewAge guru fell to her knees and committedher life to Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

We should expose the darkness. This is a salvific issue that can make the difference between heaven and hell.

Virtue later published a message onher Facebook page recounting herconversion experience and warningagainst the New Age practices she onceembraced. She was subsequently firedby her publisher and criticized by many ofher followers. Numerous videos began toemerge on YouTube with titles like “WhatHappened to Doreen Virtue?”

Her followers made wild speculationsabout why she had become a Christian. Some said she was the victim ofgovernment mind control, others thatit was the effects of menopause. Someeven argued that she was doing it for themoney, a claim she attempted to refuteby giving refunds for two years to anyonewho previously boughther products.

Virtue wanted people to understand thatthe real reason she had left the New Agewas her encounter with Jesus Christ. She began posting new videos sharingher testimony and warning people tostay away from her previous New Ageteachings. As an outspoken but rawnew believer, she soon realized thatshe needed a better grasp on theologyand the Bible and decided to apply to, enrolling as a fulltimestudent in 2018.

“Going to Western was one of the bestdecisions I ever made,” she says. “At firstI was so wobbly on my theological feet, but I learned how to rightly divideGod’s Word and to see Jesus inevery part of the Bible.”

Virtue appreciated all of herclasses and professors, especiallyCarl Laney’s Bible survey courses. She was also grateful for a classthat taught her how the OldTestament was used in the NewTestament.

“Biblical theology wasnew to me,” she admits. “It wasfascinating to see the whole Bibleas God’s plan of redemption.”

Virtue graduated with her MA inBiblical and Theological Studiesin 2021 with highest honors. Her success as a student was aconfirmation to her that she wasdeveloping a biblical worldviewand a new heart through Christ’swork on the cross.

Today, Virtue is passionate aboutdiscipling people who come outof the New Age. She works with manywomen, helping them get plugged intoa local church and encouraging them toread the Bible. She continues to combatNew Age philosophies both inside andoutside the church, so that others won’tbe blinded as she was. Because ofcontinuing public persecution from NewAgers, Virtue is hesitant to share whereshe lives or what church she attends. Butshe will not stop sharing her story as sheattempts to reach more New Agers whoare trapped in deception.
